The prospect of getting a tooth pulled can be intimidating, especially if you have never undergone a similar procedure in the past. The good news is that there is nothing to worry about. Dentists perform tooth extractions all the time, and you can be confident that your dentist wants you to have a positive care experience! What are some specific steps that you can take to overcome your fear of tooth extractions and minimize the stress associated with your treatment? Here are a few suggestions:

Ask Questions

Often, fear is the result of not knowing what to expect. If you do not know what happens during a tooth extraction, how long the recovery takes, or what sensations you can expect to experience, you may be anxious about the road ahead. Do not hesitate to ask your dentist lots of questions; they can walk you through the treatment process so you have a good idea of what the future holds.

Make Sure that a Tooth Extraction Is the Best Option

In the vast majority of cases, dentists only recommend extraction as the last resort. Before recommending this procedure, they always consider more conservative treatment possibilities.

If you are not sure whether an extraction is really the best choice for you, it is okay if you seek a second opinion — your dentist should not be offended that you want to double-check that you are doing the right thing.

See if You Are a Candidate for Sedation

It is standard procedure to numb the patient’s mouth during extraction procedures. The numbing agent will prevent you from feeling pain, but it will not block out all sensation. You may feel some pressure as your dental team works in your mouth.

If you are not easily numbed, or you suspect you will need extra help to stay relaxed during your appointment, ask your dentist if you are a candidate for sedation. Dental sedation can dull your response to pain and help you stay calm and relaxed throughout your procedure.

Recruit Some Moral Support

There is no shame in asking a trusted friend or family member to accompany you to your appointment. They can offer some encouraging words as you undergo treatment!

Listen to Music

If the sounds of the dental office make you uncomfortable, bring some earbuds with you to your appointment. Listen to some soothing music. Alternatively, you could listen to a fascinating podcast or audiobook.

It is normal to be a little anxious about getting a tooth removed. Use the above tips to make the experience as easy as possible!
