What to Expect After Root Canal Therapy

Relaxing at home after root canal in Allen

Do you have an upcoming appointment for root canal therapy? Your dentist will do everything they can to ensure you have a comfortable experience. Still, you might wonder what you can expect after you leave the dental office and begin your recovery. Let’s talk about what may occur during the days and weeks following your root canal in Allen.

Oral Sensitivity

Root canal therapy is one of the best ways to relieve the pain from a severe toothache. However, the procedure itself might cause some sensitivity, swelling, and bleeding. After all, it is a surgery. To keep discomfort to a minimum, you may need to take over the counter pain relievers. You should also temporarily stick to a diet of soft foods. Things like applesauce, soft fruits, and brothy soups (nothing hot or spicy) are all good choices.

Also, keep in mind that you should chew on the side of your mouth opposite from where the root canal was performed. Even though the treated tooth will have a temporary restoration to protect it, you shouldn’t expose it to any significant force.

Rest Is Important

If you were sedated during your procedure, you may continue to feel groggy for several hours (or even a day or longer) after your appointment. Listen to your body and be sure to get adequate rest. You might choose to take a day or two off work, and it would be wise to avoid strenuous activity for a few days.

Your Follow-Up Appointment

Be sure to attend any recommended follow-up appointments with your dentist in Allen. They will check on your recovery and, at some point, they will replace your temporary restoration with a permanent one. Once your permanent restoration is in place, it should be safe for you to resume eating virtually any food. The restorations that are placed after root canal therapy are designed with both aesthetics and function in mind. You can expect your treated tooth to look and feel good!

What if Something Goes Wrong?

Root canal therapy is successful in the vast majority of cases. In fact, with proper care, a treated tooth may continue to function and feel good for a lifetime. However, in rare instances, there are post-treatment complications. If you experience severe pain that lingers, abnormal swelling, or blood/pus-filled discharge, you should contact your dentist immediately. Such symptoms may mean that your root canal failed, and your tooth requires retreatment. Root canal failure can occur soon after the initial procedure or even years later.

Root canal therapy has the potential to relieve your pain and preserve a damaged tooth. If you have questions about what to expect from this restorative procedure, your dentist would be happy to chat with you.
